Five-year-old Sam Winchester plays contentedly with his big brother's green army men on the linoleum kitchen floor.  His nine-year-old brother, Dean, reads his newest car magazine in their bedroom at the far end of the hall. John Winchester works diligently at the kitchen table updating his journal with the circumstances and outcome of his last hunt.

"Pow! Pow! Pow!" Sam barks, simulating the firing of weapons as he holds a plastic green soldier in each of his small hands, the tiny men facing each other with their rifles.  He tosses one of the little men over his shoulder, the soldier obviously the loser in the recent gun battle.

Getting into the action, Sam mimics the high-pitched whistle of mortar fire, his hand sweeping across the floor towards a row of army men. "Aaah-ka’boom!"

"Take that, you dirty bitch."  Sam slams his hand down hard on the floor, wiping out an entire battalion of men.  "No, fuck’m!" he growls as he swings his leg out to retaliate. He destroys another cluster of army men to the right of him.

"SAMUEL WINCHESTER!”  John’s voice is loud and full of surprise.  Sam’s head pops up instantly.  “What just came out of your mouth?  Front and center young man," John orders. He pushes his chair away from the table. The chair legs scrape across the bare floor.  John stands to his full height with his arms crossed over his chest.

Sam recognizes the sternness of his father's voice.  He gets to his feet without hesitation and quickly scampers to stand under his father's grim stare.

"Samuel, I’ve told you before you’re not to use those words.  What do you have to say for yourself?"

Sam pauses for a second. "I forgot?"  He shyly offers, giving his dad his best innocent puppy look.

Unfortunately, it’s a look his father has grown immune to over the years.

"A warm bottom and some corner time should help that memory of yours," John admonishes.  He quickly reaches down to grab the youngster.

"No," Sam slaps his father's hand away.  "DEEEEAN," he shrieks as he turns to run to find his big brother, his protector.

John grabs his son's forearm.  He pulls the squirming youngster in close and bends Sam over his left thigh to apply four hard swats to the child's bottom.

Tears streak down Sam's cheeks.  He opens his mouth but his cries are silent.

John lifts his son up to his shoulder.  "Sammy, your spanking's over. You're okay," John rubs his son's back. “Breathe kiddo.”

Sam gasps deeply, inhaling a large breath of air.  He exhales with a tearful cry.

John knows little Sammy craves his father’s warmth and attention after a spanking. He wonders if the child’s need for paternal closeness fuels his dramatics.

John rests Sam’s head on his shoulder. He holds his son against his chest in a tight comforting hug. He whispers soft reassurances in his child’s ear. He pats and rubs Sam's back until he quiets.

John carries his child to the far corner of the room. He slides Sam down from his chest. "You’re to stand in this corner until I tell you to come out.  You're to think about why you're being punished."   John positions the sniffling child with his face towards the corner.  "Do you understand?"

"Yes, Daddy," Sam snivels.

John soothingly pats Sam twice on the top of his head before he turns away from his youngest. He moves across the kitchen towards the opposite doorway.  He knows his fatherly duty is only half-complete.

Dean bounces into the kitchen running straight into his father's solid form.

"Is Sammy ok?  I thought I heard him yell."  Dean sneaks a look around his father's muscular stature.  He eyes his baby brother standing in the far corner rubbing his sore butt.  "Oh, what's he in for?"

"Your brother's fine.  He's learning there are consequences for disobeying an order.” John glances over at Sammy.  “Sammy’s rethinking his decision to use bad words.”  John levels a stern look at his oldest.  “Dean, get me a bar of soap from the bathroom.”

"Dad, Sammy's too little to have his mouth washed out with soap," Dean beseeches, slightly horrified.

"It's not for him, son," John raises both eyebrows at his eldest.

Dean's facial expression drops as he realizes the meaning of his father's words.  "What'd I do?" Dean asks, surprised.

"Where do you suppose Sam heard those bad words?"

"Uncle Bobby?" Dean suggests.

"Nice try, but we haven’t seen Bobby in months."

John points towards the bathroom.

"Not fair. I didn't do anything. How come I'm gettin’ punished?"  Dean squawks. He stamps his foot.

John's heard enough of his son's insubordination. He wraps his muscular arm around the back of the youngster's waist, bending Dean forward and lifting the boy off the floor.  John delivers five strong swats to the presented backside.  He returns Dean to his feet.

Dean glares at his father, “You didn’t have to do that,” he mumbles as he rubs his butt.

“It appears both you and your brother have forgotten who gives the orders in this family. That was a reminder.” John points towards the bathroom. “Move it," he orders sternly.

Dean scampers quickly out of the kitchen in the direction of the bathroom.

"Samuel, keep your nose in that corner if you know what's good for you," John admonishes when he sees his youngest sneaking a look.

Dean drags himself back into the kitchen.  Without a word, he obediently presents the unwrapped bar of soap to his father.

"Dean, do you know why you're being punished?"

"Yeah, because Sam can't keep his mouth shut," Dean glares at his brother.

"Can to!"  Sam interjects.

"SAMUEL, what were your orders?"

"Yes, sir," Sam turns back to face the corner.

"Don't blame your brother, Dean. You know the rules."

"Yes, sir," Dean responds sullenly.

"Open your mouth."

Dean squeezes his eyes shut.  He opens his mouth wide.

John places the bar half way into Dean's mouth.  "Close," John commands.  He looks at his watch.  "Two minutes."  He sits on a chair at the table, pretending to review his notes as he keeps a close eye on his watch.

Dean shoves his hands in his front pants pockets, standing as stiffly as possible.  He hopes his stillness will somehow keep the nasty bitter taste of the soap from filling his entire mouth.  The last time, he’d only had to endure one minute’s worth of punishment.  Sam must have really spewed a mouthful this time.

Dean remembers the first time his dad opted for the soap as punishment.  Dean had lost his temper and had used a new phrase he’d learned at the Roadhouse.  He’d told his father to fuck off.  When his dad was through with him, he spat bubbles for an hour and had sat on a very sore bottom for the rest of the day.

"Time," John announces.

Dean grabs the soap out of his mouth and sprints to the kitchen sink. He spits hard into the sink.  He spits three or four times to get the lingering soap taste out of his mouth.

John pushes his chair back from the table.  "Dean, come here."

Dean spits repeatedly into the sink, ignoring his father for the moment.

"Now, Dean."

John puts his arm around his hesitant son's shoulder.  He pulls him in close to his muscular thigh.

Dean’s face scrunches up as he swallows for the first time.  The spitting didn’t help.

John lowers his chin, tilting his face slightly away from Dean's line of sight.  He suppresses an understanding grin. He thinks back to when his own father gave him a good mouth cleaning.

"Dean, you’ll always be the big brother. And as a big brother, you have responsibilities to your family and to your little brother,” John explains. “Sam listens to everything you say. He watches every move you make and tries to imitate you. He wants to be like you."

Dean frowns. "Well, tell the squirt to stop."

"It doesn't work that way, son.” John lifts Dean to sit on his thigh. “You’re my first born. You'll always be the oldest.  Sam will always look up to you, so you need to set a good example for him.  You need to follow orders, so he’ll learn the importance of following orders. That includes watching your language in front of him."

"It sucks to be a big brother," Dean says quietly.

"It can,” John agrees.  “But there are good parts to being a big brother too. You get to do everything first."

"I do?"  Dean asks brightly.  "Like what?"

Without hesitation, John begins the list. "You got your pocketknife first.  You learned to shoot a gun before Sam was even allowed to hold one.  Uncle Bobby lets you work on his cars with him.  And when you're older, you'll learn to drive the Impala first.”  John pauses.  “Dean, being a big brother means you will always have a little brother who adores you unconditionally. He knows you will always love him and take care of him.”

“Even if he’s a pain in my….”

Dean,” John warns.

“Yes sir.”

“Are you feeling better about your responsibilities to your brother?”

"I guess," Dean replies.  "So when can I drive?"  He quickly perks up.

"I'll get back to you on that,” John chuckles. “Until then, the order stands.  No driving.”  John reconsiders as he looks to the far corner. He clarifies, “Either of you."

"Okay, as long as I get to drive before Sam."  Dean smirks at his brother who’s peaking at him from the corner.

John hugs Dean in close to his chest with the arm he has around the boy's shoulder.

"Sam, come over here," John opens his other arm for his youngest to slide into.

Sam runs quickly to his father.  He climbs awkwardly into his father's lap and sits on his dad’s other thigh.

"Sam, have you thought about why you were punished?"

"Yes daddy.  I won't use bad words, ever again.” Sam nods up and down and then left to right. “Even if Dean does."

Sam sticks his tongue out at his brother and Dean retorts with a lopsided grin.

"That’s enough you two,” John warns.  “Go play, so I can finish my work."

"We're done?"  Dean asks hopefully.

John nods.  "Yes, son, we're done for now. But if we ever have to revisit this, your butts will not like the consequences."  John pulls the boys into a strangling hug before releasing both.  He slides the boys to their feet.

"No more interruptions if you know what's good for you. Scoot," John simultaneously gives the boys a swat on their butts to send them on their way.

The boys poke and nudge each other as they retreat to the next room.

John sits down at the kitchen table to continue his work. He’s distracted by the serious tones coming from the next room. He eavesdrops on the conversation between his two sons.

"Dean, was the soap really bad?" Little Sammy asks his big brother.

John waits for the nine-year-old to strut his cavalier bravado.  He’s pleased when Dean takes a more mature approach.

Dean places his arm around Sammy's shoulder.  "Yeah, it sucked,” he states flatly.

"Would daddy do that to me?" Sam asks hesitantly.

Dean looks over his shoulder at his father sitting motionless at the kitchen table.  He speaks knowingly to Sam, "Yeah, if you don’t follow orders he will. No more bad words."

"I'll never, ever say another bad word.  Cross my heart," Sam states with conviction as he crosses his heart.

John presses his lips together. He nods understandingly at his baby's eternal pledge to give up swearing. Swearing is not the worst habit the boys could embrace, but his orders must be followed. They must be enforced. Following orders keeps his boys safe. If a sore butt gets them to follow orders, then John Winchester will keep his sons safe.

THE END

Aw, thank you. I love how Sam called for Dean to protect him. And Dean's "Because Sammy can't keep his mouth shut" was just too funny. All around, such a cute fic. *grin*

I tried to show an established, tight brotherly relationship. Sam knows Dean will protect him then throws him under the bus later when John asks about why he was punished. Sam blames Dean. Dean blames Sam. They walk away nudging and poking each other. Only brothers can get away with that. Glad you liked it.

Ah, that was good, sweet Winchester boys. You always do such a good job with writing Sam and Dean as children. I liked the opening with Sam playing with the army figurines, John going through his notes, and Dean looking through his car magazine, it was a nice and quiet domestic scene, which we don't get too often. I felt really bad for Dean with the soap bit. I swear getting your mouth washed out with soap is worse then a spanking, my mom used to use dish soap which was God awful. I liked Deaan protecting Sam from getting his mouth washed out with soap by being honest about how bad it was, and telling him that he can prevent it from happening by not cussing anymore. It's great getting a new fic from you. It's been too long.

I'm glad you like how I write the boys. *g* For some reason my muse likes to write about them as youngsters. I never seem to finish any of my teen or adult stories. I think there's variations on how kids get their mouths washed out with soap. Once I saw somebody get their mouth washed out with a bar of Dial soap. God awful says it all. I was real careful what I said after that. I didn't want John to seem too harsh with Dean so I made up the two minute rule. I think Dean has been protecting and teaching Sam since they were little. He still does it as an adult. Thanks for your kind comment. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated.

Ewww, poor Dean, that soap in the mouth thing just gives me the chills. Sammy was really cute in this one and I LOVED how John was tender with both of his boys after punishing them!

I'm with you about the soap. I was hoping the two minute rule wasn't too harsh or out of character for John. I love a strong, stern John who has a soft spot for his boys. Thanks for commenting.

I had read this before, but didn't comment. Loved how you had the family at their best-John trying hard to be a good Dad, Dean taking care of Sammy, Sammy trying the puppy eyes on John (and failing). Please write more, I would really enjoy reading it!

Your little Sammy is fantastic! I loved the way he got in trouble without even realizing it.

I hate the idea of the soap bar so that is definitively a good deterrent, even more to young Dean, who had to be using this language in front of his brother!!!!

Very nice domestic scene, well built and developed.

Sammy just wanted to win the war with his big brother's army men and look what it got him, a sore butt. I thought John would go with the soap punishment because it fit the crime. I think of him as a no-nonsense but loving parent. Glad you liked it.
